Ria believes in Africa. In its people and its culture.

To prove our interest we brought the biggest star of African music to Paris, France: Youssou N’Dour, known as the ‘Lion of Dakar’. Named one of the hundred most influential people in the world by Time magazine in 2007, N’Dour is considered one of the most powerful voices in Africa. He demonstrated this on October 12, 2013, performing at an exceptional concert in the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, sponsored by Ria Financial.

With more than 18,000 attendees, the concert was his first in Paris after a three-year break, during which time N’Dour served as Minister of Tourism and Culture for his country, Senegal. The completely sold out concert revisited the African singer’s whole musical career – something that is closely related to Africa’s recent history. His music speaks of a happy Africa, proud of itself and with confidence in the future.

N’Dour has built his career by reshuffling the traditional rhythms from his country into a new form called  Mbalax. The thousands of spectators at the concert danced to the rhythm that has fascinated stars like Peter Gabriel and Paul Simon, with whom N’Dour has recorded songs. The concert lasted more than five hours and N’Dour performed more than 30 songs, with many invited African stars making appearances including: Salam Diallo, Papa N’Diaye, Aida Samb, Sekou Ba Bambino Dibate, Viviane N’Dour, Titi, Pape Diouf, Carlou D, Mame Goor and Diazaka. The show was presented by well-known showman, DJ Boubacar Diallo.

N’Dour is one of the main examples of how Africa is opening up to the world, teaching all of us something relevant. He shows us how by being deeply African, by being connected to his roots, a singer can also be hugely successful.

“You” as he is known in Africa, believes in his continent and his culture. Exactly like our clients, who make low-cost money transfers every day to their home countries. Both show us how to (really) change the world, and that’s why we support this message of pride and confidence in Africa, where Ria is expanding its services.

We just couldn’t miss the opportunity to honour the masthead of our blog, and the reason why we are in this business.
