Regent’s University London and Ria Financial, the global money transfer company, have today (9 May 2014) signed a major five-year collaboration agreement. Ria Financial will sponsor the University’s work on remittances research and transnational studies, led by Professor Ibrahim Sirkeci, the Director of the Regent’s Centre for Transnational Studies.

The collaboration will give Regent’s the opportunity to work closely with the professional teams of a truly transnational company and have access to the data generated by its worldwide operation. Students at Regent’s will also be given a rare opportunity to gain a unique insight into Ria’s market and business activity.  It is hoped that this first project will be the beginning of a series of new collaborations.

Professor Sirkeci is a leading expert on remittances, human mobility and transnational marketing.  He co-authored Migration and Remittances during the Global Financial Crisis and Beyond, which was published by the World Bank in 2012. His most recent book, Transnational Marketing and Transnational Consumers, was published by Springer in 2013. Professor Sirkeci has a particular interest in emphasising the importance of the role of remittances in economic development in developing countries.

This collaboration will lead to further world class research on remittances, money transfer markets, human mobility and economic development. Several case studies and scholarly articles are expected to be generated as a result of the sponsorship.

Commenting at the signing of the collaboration agreement, Professor Aldwyn Cooper, Vice Chancellor of Regent’s University London, said:

“Regent’s is about developing tomorrow’s global leaders who can work effectively in world markets. The need for effective financial transfer is a continually growing service in today’s environment. We are delighted to enter into this research collaboration with Ria, a world leader in secure, modern remittance services. Together we hope to develop a greater understanding of the growing need and we are very grateful to Ria for this support of Prof. Sirkeci and the centre.”

Professor Ibrahim Sirkeci, Director of the Regent’s Centre for Transnational Studies, said:

“Our motto for the Regent’s Centre for Transnational Studies is ‘research that matters’. Ria’s sponsorship reflects this guiding principle which directs us above and beyond journal impact factors. This generous support will enable further research in transnational marketing and remittances, the two key areas of my research.”

Michael Unger, Director of Corporate Business Development, EMEA, said:

“Ria Financial is delighted to sponsor and facilitate research on remittances at Regent’s University London. As an innovative transnational money transfer company, Ria aims to reduce the costs and complexities of remittances which are perceived as an important element in global efforts in improving the lives of millions in developing countries.”

Marcela Gonzalez, Ria and Euronet Payment Services Managing Director for UK & Ireland, said:

“I’m honoured to be the one opening the door of Ria to Regent’s University of London. Some studies have concluded that when companies and universities work together as strategic partners to push the frontiers of knowledge, they become a powerful engine of innovation and economic growth. Our aim is to be in harmony with the global interest of benefiting the developed and poor countries through their migrants who send their money home.”
