Ria Italy marks 10 years in the money transfer business

Birthdays and anniversaries. Sometimes they slip by unnoticed and other times they call for a good celebration.

Ria’s Italian division reached a milestone this year, when they celebrated a decade in the business.

Part of Ria Italy’s success can be attributed to Country Manager, Silvia Pastormerlo, who has been at the helm since the beginning. And although Ria has operated in Italy since 2001, it was not until 2004 that the business became independently licensed and operated.

Ria’s Italian team celebrated 10 years in 2014.

Here Silvia recalls some highlights of the decade-long journey; from the Ria’s humble beginnings, to becoming one of the market leaders in the Italian money transfer business:

“When I started with Ria, I had been preparing my suitcases to go back to my home country, Argentina, after ending a position with another money transfer company. But I ended up staying, and in 2003, I began as a sales representative.

The Ria offices were located in one of the nicest areas of Rome, in a 17th Century building a few minutes from the Pantheon and near the centre of the historical area of the city. At that time there were just two people in a simple two-room office. And back then, we weren’t processing a large volume of transactions.

Over the next five years Ria grew a lot – but not the size of our office! We bought huge individual desks, and as the company continued to expand, these were later shared with at least three people crammed around them. I remember having conference calls sitting under my desk so as not to be distracted by the voices of my colleagues. Then at the beginning of 2009 we moved to Trastevere, a charming area of Rome, close to the centre and well-known for its restaurants and bars.

We were a little family then.

Now we are a big family that still carries this same feeling. And this is what allows us grow and grow.

It was, and still is, our ‘secret sauce’.

Founding members of Ria Italy who are still with the company today surround a piece of Ria’s history.

One of my fondest memories is being sat at my desk one evening and a colleague calling to inform me that we were about to hit a major transaction milestone – but we were so busy that we had not even realised it!

Thinking back over the last 10 years, the business has changed, but many of the founders of Ria Italy are still with us. Thanks to their contribution, today we have surpassed the competitors and all expectations, to become the second largest money transfer company operating in Italy, with several thousand agents.

As for what the future holds, we expect to continue expanding in a market that has changed a lot in the past few years. Although the competition is fierce, Ria Italy continues to go from strength to strength.”

Congratulations Ria Italy! Here’s to the next 10 years.
